Representation Of Age In The Media



The Inbetweeners shows teenagers as people who want to get away, get drunk and have fun. This is a stereo-typical view that some people dislike teenagers for but others just accept it. I don't think this portrays them badly. I don't think there's anything wrong with it and I don't think too many people would have an issue with it. I think it is a stereo-typical but fair assessment. They are wearing fairly typical clothes; football shirts, jeans, trainers etc. We get a mixture of shots; some close ups, some very close and some long shots. In this trailer the lighting is fairly evenly distributed at high-key, low-key and natural.

Why I made my pre-production

For my pre-production I am making a front cover for a football magazine. I decided to base it on a particular FourFourTwo issue. I decided to use FourFourTwo because it is a popular, famous and successful magazine. It wasn’t the most popular magazine according to my survey but I went with it as most people that answered said they “never” buy a magazine so I didn't really count that. Red is a fairly common feature on my front cover. The the name of my magazine is red because Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal are all widely-supported teams, my statistics from my survey support this. The name is one of the first things you see on a magazine, so if it is the same colour as your team then that might attract you to buy it. It’s unlikely to stop supporters of other teams buying the magazine so it can only be a good thing. The answers from my survey also revealed that most people who buy these magazines will play FIFA 15. With this in mind I included this on my front cover. I think that if people see that the game feature in my magazine then they might be encouraged to buy it. The “puffs” had things that I think would attract customers. One of them was about Gareth Bale winning the ballon d’or. I chose this because some people answered him as the best player in the world. He plays for Real Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo who people also answered as the best, so I think this would open the audience even more. Furthermore, Bale is very much appreciated by Tottenham fans which would expand the audience again as they might want to find out about him. I also included the “10 richest players in the world”. People are obsessed with money and they might be interested to know who they are. The third puff is about David Beckham. Being a well-known celebrity and playing for some of the biggst clubs in the world Beckham is widley-respected throughout football and the rest of the world. He is a fashion icon and putting him in could attract older customers and maybe females. The other three players mentioned are three of the best in the league. Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero  play for Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City respectively. Again these teams are very well supported but due to the immense qualities of these players I think that most people would be interested by them.The last thing I included was the “73 things Instagram has told us about footballers”. I used this because I think that people would be interested to see what these things are. Overall to attract a big audience I've tried to please many people. Featuring games, popular players and teams with a big fan base I've attempted to make it as appealing as possible. I think that a lot of football fans would be interested by it and might buy it.

Analysis of results

The majority of my responses were male. 14/15 respondents were male meaning 93.33%. 13\15 (86.67%) were under 18 years old whilst 2/15 (13.33%) were 35-44 years old. The amount they're willing to pay is very varied. To get the right price I will find the mean price by the amount of people willing to pay for each price. For example, 2 people said they'd pay under £1 so if i do (2X£0.99) £1.98+(6X£1.99)=£13.92+(6X£2.99)=£31.86+(1X£4.99)=£36.85 I'll call this £37. If I do £37\15 (number of responses) I get £2.46 so I think an appropriate price would be £2.49. However, this was the price of a weekly magazine and 0 of my respondents said they'll by one weekly. 8\15 (53.33%) said monthly whilst 7\15 (46.67%) said they'd never buy one. Out of my 15 reposes there was 6 different supported tams and one who said "no-one really." so they shouldn't be too bothered. I had Arsenal (1), Leicester City (1), Liverpool (2), Manchester City (1), Manchester United (6) and Tottenham Hotspur (3). The best player in the world question produced many answers, as expected. Cristiano Ronaldo got (9), Lionel Messi (3), Gareth Bale (2) and Luis Suarez (1). This is useful because these players play for Real Madrid and Barcelona so a La Liga feature could be used. 100% of my responses said they enjoy football-based video games so that is also helpful. Every answer was used when asked about their favourite magazine so that isn't very helpful. Especially how one respondent said other but didn't specify. the only thing to take from this is MOTD is the favourite by 3 votes.

More textual analysis (MOTD)

Match Of The Day is a long-running, very popular football highlights show. When they produced a magazine it was always likely to be popular. This magazine is probably aimed at 9-13 year-old boys. The first element is that they are giving away free match attax. These are very popular football trading cards and the fact they are free will interest the audience. The Coverline is in big, black, bold letters on a bright yellow backround. This means it catches the eye and is easy to see. Te word "of" has a football as the "o" because it is football-based. This is clever and the audience might appreciate this. As you can clearly see in the puffs, this issue features posters. There are posters of Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. These teams are huge in football and are very attractive. Most football fans will appreciate these teams and the younger fans could take inspiration from them. the EA sorts game FIFA is a massive hit world wide played by many people. They say that this will give us "game secrets inside!" This will appeal to the audience as the majority will play FIFA and due to their age they'll probably want tips to become the best. Another puff is the "look-a-likes!" This is supposed to be funny and will probably be well received by the audience. There is an image of the popular Arsenal player, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. By showing players like him it's likely that the audience will be attracted to buying the magazine. They also show the "new kits revealed!" to entice the audience into seeing them. Radamel Falcao is one of the best strikers in the world so the fact he has a £47m price tag and has a speech bubble saying "see ya in the prem!" making people want to find out who it is. This shows how they lie to exploit the audience though as it can't be very accurate because he moved to AS Monaco in this window. Sergio Aguero is another amazing player and young premier league fans will definitely look up to him. An interview with such a popular and inspirational player will increase sales for sure. Towards the bottom of the page is a feature with the Champions league. A competition that most people say is the biggest featuring Europe's elite. They have a photo of two champions league players that many consider as the best two in the world. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are having banter that some younger readers might find funny. In the middle it also has Will.i.Am saying "find out which club I'm like!" He is probably reasonably popular with the audience and something like this will appeal. Finally, Robin Van Persie, Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez and Michu are all shown in the middle showing the player of the year award. These players were outsatanding in this season scoring 78 premier league goals between them. These players would appeal to most and are probably the inspiration of many therefore expanding the audience even more.

More textual analysis (FourFourTwo)

The masthead is FourFourTwo. Four-four-two is a very traditional and recognisable formation in football so you automatically make that link. This tells us that it is a football-realted magazine so when a football fan sees the cover line there's a good chance they will buy it. It has an image of Pep Guardiola, one of the most respected managers in the world string at the camera and making eye-contact therefore drawing the audience in. On the right is Phillip Lahm, Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben, Mario Gotze and Thiago Alacantra. Lahm is a very respected player and a true professional along side Muller and Robben who are two of the best in the world. Goats and Thiago are two young stars and are predicted to have a very bright future. Gotze scored the world cup-wining goal and is 22 years of age so would be an inspiration to readers. Another legend of the game is Alessandro Del Piero who appears in the bottom left corner. He has played for some of the best in the world over a long time period and is another world cup-winner. In big, bold letters we see "Bayern Munich" and "Inside the world's best team". This makes a football fan want to buy it as they are probably interested by finding out more about such a successful team. At the bottom we see a "transfer special". Manchester United are probably the most supported team in the country and they probably take up the majority of the audience. Therefore, by putting "Man United's top target speaks" and not telling us who that is will make Man United fans want to find out who it is. This means they'll be more likely to buy the magazine. Another way they do this but for a more general audience is by putting "10 prem-bound stars revealed" as they try to tempt us to find out who they are. In the top right there is a photo of Daniel Sturridge, one of Liverpool's best players. They are trying to drag in different audiences again as this would appeal to Liverpool fans and interest them. On the front cover they are attracting Liverpool fans, united fans, Serie A fans, Bundesliga fans and a Premier league fans. They are trying to cover many angles of football. The red of "FourFourTwo" could signify love. The red could be a connotation as the love could be love for football. This shows how much they care about it and means that football fans will take them more seriously and increase the likeliness of buying it. It could also be interpreted as representing teams. Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool are 3 of the most supported teams in the country. This means their audience will include many of these fans. By making their cover-line the same colour as the majority of the audience's team, they will appeal to many football fans. There is also a green and yellow circle. Green and yellow are very much associated with Brazil and it has `brazil in the title. This will refer to the world cup, something that excites fans who like football and who don't. This will make many people want to read about it and again, increase their audience size.

Magazine cover (1)

The masthead of the magazine is Men's health which would suggest that the intended audience is men. The image shows David Beckham. Beckham is an iconic figure with his footballing past, celebrity wife, good looks and his clothing range. Many boys would probably strive to me like him and many men who would've grown up with him would probably like him. This draws you towards buying the magazine. The cover lines also help to draw you in. "101 ways to look great" would draw a man in because they still want to look good as they is get older, like Beckham. "Style muscle" would also catch the eye because most men want to be muscular and toned. Jimmie Johnson is a 39 year old man, similar to Beckham and similar to the audience. Words from him will also get the attention of the audience. "Sex scents" and what follows will be for men who go to the gym to look after themselves and don't let their age get them down. On the right it relates to Beckham and shows how you can be like him. "Wear it like Beckham" is humorous because of the well-known film bend it like Beckham. From this the I think the intended audience is men from 25-44 years old.

Textual analysis- The Body

The Body is a Spanish film that's spoken in Spanish. Whilst the titles are still rolling, you hear a bird call. Bird calls can be quite eery and this could signify something bad is soon to happen. The bird call is diegetic. The bird call then draws closer which suggests that the audience is cooer to the action and we are closer to something happening. The fact that in the open stages all we hear are bird calls and cricket chirps show how quiet the setting is. It's quiet and there's low-key lighting which sets a spooky scene. This means that we are ready for something bad to happen. The third element of diegetic sound is footsteps. this indicate stat someone is coming. We now have the impression that something bad is to happen as well as the fact that someone is walking along. This suggests that this person is either going to do something bad or have something bad happen to them. The mis-en-scene shows a desperate man panting and running through the dark equipped with a torch. This is mysterious and means that he is possibly at risk. He is wearing a suit and running through a dark forest. I think this could mean that someone is after him and possibly for his money as his clothes suggest he could be rich. We then hear a car horn blast as two headlights sway from left to right. The man runs into the road and collides with an incoming car. This could be the bad thing we were anticipating. The scene to follow this is silent and is late in the night as a man, who we later find out to be a police officer, answers his phone. The mis-on-scene reveals his occupation as we see a close up shot of his badge.
